David Stirling (1887-1971) ”Rainy Sunset” - David Stirling (1887-1971) Oil on Upson board, signed lower right, verso reads ”Rainy Sunset, Estes Park”, circa 1941 and measures 18 x 24 and 22 x 28 inches w/frame. From a San Fransisco collection. David Stirling was born in 1887 in Iowa to a pioneering family. He attended the Cummings Art School in Des Moines, Iowa and the Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago. In 1918 he got married and the new couple spent their summers in Estes Park. He painted Rocky Mountain National Park but was most well known for his colorful aspen paintings. He worked exclusively in oils and painted on board for the most part. Stirling received many awards and citations for his art work and community involvement. The Governor of Colorado presented him with a congratulatory sheep skin outlining his career on the occasion of his 50th anniversary as a resident artist of the Rocky Mountain National Park.
