John Faunce Leavitt (1905 - 1974) American - John Faunce Leavitt (1905 - 1974) Pencil and Watercolour, on Paper , Signed , measures 14” x 21.5” , w/frame 22” x 30” ohn Faunce Leavitt, born in Lynn, MA, was many things during his lifetime - newspaper reporter, yacht broker, for some fifteen years an invaluable member of the curatorial staff at the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Connecticut, and a self-trained artist of great technical competence and accuracy who possessed intimate knowledge of his subject. Having grown up around the sea and having sailed on one of the last Down Easters (merchant sailing vessels that sailed up and down the New England coast), Leavitt used his meticulous attention to detail to capture sailing vessels during the final days of sail. He is best known for working with watercolors, because he could exploit this precision to accurately depict how the ships moved through wind and water.In addition to his artistic talents, Leavitt became an author, writing and illustrating the history of America's last surviving whaling vessel, The Charles W.
