Frank Louville Bowie (1857 - 1936) American - Frank Louville Bowie (1857 - 1936) Oil on Canvas, Signed, Measures ( 16 x 20 inches ) w/frame ( 20 x 24 inches ) Frank L. Bowie is listed in the 1912 Portland Maine Directory as a shipping clerk, with home on 28 Locust Street. He was an artist who painted for 45 years in Portland, having studied under Hudson and Charles Fox and at the Cox Art School, Boston. In later years he was custodian of the Sweat Art Museum, Portland. (Ellis, 1962 p. 27). FRANK LOUVILLE BOWIE (1857-1936) was a member of the Brush-Ins (also found The Brush'uns) a Portland Maine group of artists which also included Walter Gay. Bowie knew Winslow Homer. I have a photocopy of an old newspaper article about an exhibition at the Portland Art Museum in which his work was hung. It pictures Bowie as the Secretary of the Portland Society of Art. Condition: Needs Restoration and slight inpainting
