Ragnar Olson (1884 - 1949) Oil on Canvas, Signed Lower Left, Measures (16 x 20 inches) w/frame (20 x 24 inches) Mr Olson was a well known, early 20th century artist working primarily in New York City. He painted in the style of American Impressionism and was a member of the Society of Independent Artists, started by Glackens and Sloan. He is best known for his Ashcan School, figural cityscapes in New York especially Greenwich Village, the Fulton Fish Market, Washington Square etc. He also was recognized for his seascapes. Active with other Scandinavian Americans he donated a piece in the 1940's to the Scandinavian Club valued at the time at $1500. He is listed in Davenports, Malletts and elsewhere. He was a contemporary of Pollack and deKooning, some of his later work had a surrealistic tinge to it. He exhibited at the Inaugural exhibition of the Village Art Center along with Franz Kline, Fred Buchholz and William Fisher. The exhibit was covered by the noted New York Times art critic
