Bidspirit auction | William Otis Bemis (1819 -
William Otis Bemis (1819 - 1883) American - William Otis Bemis (1819 - 1883) Oil on board, Signed Lower Right, Measures (8.5 x 11.5 inches) w/frame ( 12.5 x 15.5 inches) Known for his paintings of cattle in landscape, William Bemis once said: . . .my mind is on cows so much that I think cow, dream cow, and it seems paint cow without realizing what I am about.” (Samuels 38). In fact, William Bemis not only painted cows, but as a farmer, he was the first person in Spencer to introduce Jersey cattle to the area. Bemis was born in Spencer, Massachusetts in 1819 and also painted historical sketches of his region. From the time he was young, he worked on his family's farm and learned 'boot-bottoming' to make money to pay for some art education. George Loring Brown of Worcester, Massachusetts, was the most influential teacher of Bemis, who had a studio in that town from 1847 to 1850.
