Clawson Shakespeare Hammitt (1857 - 1927) Watercolor on Paper, Signed Lower Left, Measures (8 x 12 nches) w/frame (13.5 x 16 inches) The son of Letitia Harris and Edmund Marshall Hammitt, Clawson was born on November 7, 1857, in Wilmington, Delaware. His parents endeavored unsuccessfully to interest him in a business career; the boy would have none of it. While attending the Wilmington public schools, he managed to pick up some art instruction from a local clergyman, A. T. Scott. A Wilmington jeweler, C. F. Rudolph, made it possible for Hammitt to spend time in the studio of the marine painter James Hamilton above the store. Henry Tatnall of Wilmington helped Hammitt to spend an entire summer sketching and become an established member of the Wilmington art scene. Later, Hammitt studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Among his teachers were Thomas Anshutz
