He was the son of a skilled toolmaker and merchant in Philadelphia, and records show he was a merchant in the bolt manufacture trade around 1930 with his father. Harry B. Cadwallader Jr., grew up in North Philadelphia less then two miles from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts* (PAFA), where he undoubtedly had seen Fern I. Coppedge's numerous exhibits throughout the 1920's and 1930's. Further, records indicate he was one of few known students taken under the wing of Coppedge's private tutelage, probably in the late 1930's and early 1940's. Harry B.
