Alexander Breede (20th century) American - Alexander Breede (20th century) Oil on canvas, signed lower left, measures 20 x 16 and 23 x 18 inches w/ frame. Alex Breede was born in 1892 and died in 1972. Born in Latvia, Breede was a mariner and sailor prior to World War I, eventually serving on several U.S. transport ships during the War allowing him to become a U.S. citizen. Following the war, Breede came to New York where he studied with Guy Pene Dubois and Warren Shephard, living and exhibiting in New York until the 1930s.
