(Depression Era) Pine Hurricane Souvenir Rocking Chair - From a private collection. Stamped ”Pine Souvenir N.E. Hurricane Sept. 21 1938.” This wood is from the Great New England Hurricane of 1938. One of the most destructive and powerful hurricanes in recorded history. It struck Long Island and Southern New England. There were 700 deaths and approximately 63,000 people lost their homes. The storm knocked down an estimated one out of three trees. Woodworkers used these trees to make souvenir furniture. 19-1/2” wide x 28” deep x 30-3/4” high.
