MAYNARD REECE
Born in Arnolds Park, near the shores of Lake Okoboji in northwest Iowa,
the son of a Quaker minister, Maynard Reece combined a love of nature
and a talent for art which have made him America's foremost wildlife
painter.
In 1940 Reece went to Des Moines to work as artist for the Iowa Depart-
ment of History and Archives in the museum. Here he met Ding Darling,
the famous political cartoonist, who was the first of many prominent
artists and scientists who helped guide and instruct the fledgling wildlife
painter.

QUAIL COUNTRY
Colinus virginianus
Bobwhites roost and rest in weed patches near food and
water. Waste corn left in the picked cornfield furnishes
ample food supplemented by seeds from the weedy draw
where they have been hiding.
Both sexes are found in a covey; the female is identified by a
buffy colored throat and stripe above eye, and the male
with white throat and stripe.
Mortality runs high in a covey from predators and natural
causes. With a good nesting season the covey is able to
rebound and replenish its population.
