CAPT. ADRIAN BLOCK'S fur trading ship, the "Tiger, "
burned to the water-line one fall night in 1613 while anchored
in present New York Harbor. Unable to return to Holland,
Block and his crew built four tiny huts in which they existed
with the help of food from the Indians. This was the actual
beginning of the present city of New York. During the winter
months, with very few tools, they built a ship and christened
it the "Restless." In the spring they were the first white men
to sail through Hell Gate, Long Island Sound, and as far as
the
