Born in 1938 in New York City, Joel Meyerowitz
studied painting and medical illustration at Ohio
worked in advertising as an art director. In 1962 he
quit his job to concentrate on photography and
began shooting in color In 1971 he was awarded
Guggenheim Fellowship to photograph "leisure
time" in America during the Vietnam war.
Meyerowitz has had his greatest influence as
an early advocate Ox color photography. His subject
matter has evolved from incidents on city streets
shot with 35mm camera to the rich description Ox
the large- -format photograph.
