Eldreth Pottery produces tradi-
tional Salt-Glazed Stoneware. All pot-
tery is handmade in Lancaster County
using traditional Pennsylvania German
production methods.
Salt glazing is a very old process
originating in Germany about 500 years
ago. Most early American
stoneware
was glazed with salt. Salt glazed pottery
is glazed during the firing process. When
the kiln reaches about 2,250 F, salt is
thrown inside. The salt changes from
solid to
a vapor which sticks to the clay,
forming a glass coating on the pot Be-
cause the vapor is carried through the
pots by the flame, many unique colors
and irregularities occur
