Takahashi Ryoun Signed Japanese Sculpted Bronze Phoenix Exposition Vase - No Reserve - Keywords: Japanese Bronze, Meiji Period, Gilt Bronze, Relief Vase, Sculptural Vase, Pheasant, Birds, Ivy Vine, High Relief, Metalwork, Japanese Export Art, Okaju Ryoun Summary: Signed Ryoun Important Japanese Sculpted Bronze Vase This rare vase is scupted with intricate and highly detailed designs of the mythological winged Phoenix birds with scaled wings. There is a rectangular artisan seal stamped on the base, which reads Osaka-ju Ryoun chu and translates directly to ”Resident of Osaka, cast by Ryoun.” Ryoun (often Takahashi Ryoun) was a celebrated Japanese metalwork and bronze casting artist active from the late Meiji period through the early Showa era. Honored internationally his works were revered and showcased, including at the Paris Great Exposition in 1900. This is a masterpiece by an acknowledged master. Takahashi Ryoun works are held in major institutions like the Museum of the Japanese Imperial Collections (Sannomaru Shozo-kan) in Tokyo and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. This amazing vase weighs over 40 pounds. Known as the “Fenghuang” in China or the “Ho-o” in Japan, the Phoenix is an enduring creature with a history dating back over thousands of years and a presence across many different cultures across the Globe. The physical representation of the Phoenix is consistent wherever it appears. It is always depicted as a bird with long, brightly-coloured plumage which. At the end of a long-life, the bird combusts into flames only to rise again from the ashes and begin anew. Unsurprisingly, because of this ability to “emerge from the flames”, the Phoenix is a global symbol for immortality, peace and rebirth. Have never seen anything to compare this with despite 40 plus years in the trade. This is a NO RESERVE lot. There are no hidden or confidential reserves.
