Signed ‘F. Clausen’ lower left. Bio: Franciska Clausen (Danish, 1899–1986) was a pioneering Danish modernist painter and one of Scandinavia’s important early practitioners of geometric abstraction. Born in Aabenraa, Denmark, Clausen pursued artistic training throughout Europe, studying in Weimar, Munich and Copenhagen before entering Hans Hofmann’s private school in Munich in 1921. She subsequently traveled to Berlin, where she became a private student of László Moholy-Nagy and studied at Alexander Archipenko’s school. In Paris she attended the Académie Moderne under Fernand Léger from 1924 to 1925. Her work incorporated influences from Constructivism, Cubism, Purism, Neue Sachlichkeit, Neoplasticism and Surrealism, developing into a distinctive geometric vocabulary. Clausen participated in the 1923 Grosse Berliner Kunstausstellung with the avant-garde Novembergruppe and became a member of Cercle et Carré in 1929, joining an international circle devoted to abstract art that included Mondrian, Jean Arp, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and other major modernists. Although her avant-garde work initially received limited recognition after her return to Denmark, her contribution to European modernism was subsequently reassessed and celebrated. Her work is represented in museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and a substantial body of her work is preserved by the Franciska Clausen collections in Denmark.
