Watercolor and gouache with graphite on Winsor & Newton prepared board, after Baldovinetti’s Early Renaissance composition from the Armadio degli Argenti series. The scene depicts Christ standing in the River Jordan as Saint John the Baptist pours water over his head, with the dove of the Holy Spirit appearing above and attendant figures gathered at left. The later artist closely follows the distinctive composition, landscape, figures and inscribed borders of Baldovinetti’s original. The Latin inscription across the upper border refers to Naaman descending into and washing seven times in the Jordan, an Old Testament episode traditionally understood as a prefiguration of baptism. The lower inscription refers to Christ coming to the Jordan to be baptized. Unsigned. Reverse retains a partial Winsor & Newton Etching Board manufacturer’s label and a purple ink stamp reading ‘LUIGI OLIVIERI, ROMA.’ This is a NO RESERVE lot.
