Allene Johnson, Hummingbird and Thistle, Watercolor on Paper, 2003 - A representational watercolor painting on paper depicting a hummingbird in flight, poised above three pink thistle blossoms. The artist has employed fine brushwork to capture the iridescent quality of the bird's plumage and the filament-like structure of the flower heads. The work is executed on a white paper substrate. It is professionally presented with a triple mat consisting of a wide cream-colored top mat and two narrow inner accent mats in burgundy and gold. The artwork is housed in a substantial gilt frame featuring relief-molded scrolls, acanthus leaves, and diaper-patterned lattices. The piece is signed in the lower right-hand quadrant in black script, which reads 'Allene / Johnson / '03'. The reverse is sealed with brown paper and fitted with a wire for wall mounting.
