S. Fielding and Co. Devon Ware Gilded Earthenware Biscuit Barrel - An English earthenware biscuit barrel of lobed and slightly tapered form. The exterior is decorated with a transfer-printed pattern of large blue roses set against a solid gilded ground. The vessel is fitted with silver-toned metal hardware, including a wide rim and a stylized wavy swing handle. The flat circular metal lid is secured by a central threaded post and wing nut. The interior is finished in a clear cream-colored glaze. The base bears a blue transfer-printed mark consisting of a crown symbol below the text DEVON WARE, S F & Co, STOKE ON TRENT, and ENGLAND (photo 11). A hand-painted number in iron-red pigment reads 0316. A white adhesive tag is present on the side reading 6.5 x 6.5 x 7 (photo 12). Approximately 7 inches in height and 6.5 inches in diameter.
