Tropical Landscape with Hummingbirds and Orchids Oil on Canvas - This oil on canvas painting depicts a naturalist scene featuring two hummingbirds within a lush tropical landscape. One bird is rendered in flight, approaching a tall stalk of red orchids, while the second bird is perched on a large green leaf in the foreground. The composition overlooks a winding river that recedes toward distant hazy hills under a sky with soft clouds. The avian subjects are painted with fine, detailed brushwork highlighting their iridescent plumage in shades of green, blue, and red. The painting is unsigned on the front and is housed in a substantial, deep-profile gilded composition frame. The frame features multiple tiers including reeded coves, a gadrooned inner slip, and an outer border with scrolling foliate and laurel leaf motifs. The canvas is secured to a wooden stretcher within a large frame liner. On the reverse of the canvas, the digits 89319 are handwritten in black ink (photo 9). The wooden frame reverse bears the handwritten characters 22-1 / 78 x 10 75 and multiple instances of an 8x10 stamp. A small blue and white square adhesive label is present on the liner, though the text on it is not legible (photo 9). A yellow tape measure is shown in one photograph to illustrate the frame depth.
