Bidspirit auction | Large Framed Japanese Silk Embroidery
Large Framed Japanese Silk Embroidery of a Takarabune and Cranes - This is a large-format 20th-century Japanese silk embroidery (Nihon Shishu) depicting a Takarabune (Treasure Ship) navigating stylized waves. The vessel is laden with auspicious symbols, including scrolls, plum blossoms, chrysanthemums, and peonies. Two red-crowned cranes (tancho) are depicted in flight around the ship. The work is executed on a cream-colored silk ground featuring woven horizontal bands that create a subtle landscape effect. The central sail features a single large calligraphic character for longevity (寿) embroidered in black silk thread. The embroidery utilizes diverse stitching techniques to provide texture and dimensionality, particularly in the layered feathers of the cranes and the intricate patterns of the cargo. The piece is presented under glass in a gilded wood frame with a faux-bamboo profile and a wide silk-covered mat. The reverse is finished with brown kraft paper and hanging wire. Dimensions not provided.
