Japanese Woven Textile Picture of Maiko and Kinkaku-ji Kyoto - A vintage Japanese machine-woven textile picture, executed in a jacquard tapestry technique typical of mid-to-late 20th-century Kyoto souvenirs. The composition depicts a Maiko (apprentice geisha) viewed from behind, wearing a floral-patterned kimono with a red obi and carrying a traditional red parasol. She is portrayed looking across a pond toward the Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) in Kyoto, framed by stylized pine and maple trees. The palette includes shades of gold, red, green, and cream against a light sage green ground. The textile features vertical calligraphic inscriptions in black thread reading 月はおぼろに (Tsuki wa oboro ni) and 東山 (Higashiyama), which are the opening lyrics of the famous song Gion Kouta, translating to The moon is hazy over Higashiyama. The artwork is housed in a wood-composite frame with a mottled red and gray finish and a gold-toned inner lip. 13 x 29.5 inches.
