Bidspirit auction | A Pair of Chinese Gilded
A Pair of Chinese Gilded Framed Silk Embroideries of Immortals - This is a matching pair of Chinese silk embroideries dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The panels depict traditional figures, likely from Chinese mythology. The panel on the left features a youthful immortal in red robes balancing an ornate basket of flowers on their head while holding a flowering branch. The panel on the right depicts an elderly male figure, characterized by a long beard and scholar's cap, holding a fly whisk with a sword handle visible over his shoulder. The figures are meticulously rendered using the Beijing knot, also known as the forbidden stitch, for the robes and floral elements, creating a distinctive seeded texture. The faces and hands are detailed with smooth satin stitching for contrast. The embroideries are set against a cream-colored silk ground, bordered by a dark brown inner margin and a neutral-toned fabric mat. Each piece is housed in a modern gilded wood frame with a faux-bamboo profile. Framed Size: 22.5 inches (height) by 18.5 inches (width).
