Fan Zeng Chinese b. 1938 Scholar and Goose Ink and Color Painting - A framed Chinese ink and color painting on paper by Fan Zeng (Chinese, born 1938). The composition illustrates a traditional theme featuring a bearded scholar, likely the calligrapher Wang Xizhi, holding a brush while conversing with a young attendant. A white goose with a red beak, a bird famously associated with the scholar's study of movement, stands on a rock between the two figures. The artwork is rendered in the xieyi style, characterized by spontaneous, calligraphic brushwork and light color washes. The background contains a minimalist depiction of a tree. The painting is signed on the right edge with two black ink characters, 范曾 (Fan Zeng), accompanied by a square red artist's seal. The work is presented in a giltwood frame with a foliate-patterned inner border and a black-lacquered outer edge. It is double-matted with a pale green outer mat and a thin gold-toned inner fillet. The reverse is sealed with brown craft paper and fitted with a picture hanging wire. Overall frame: 21.5 inches (H) x 23 inches (W).
