The exterior of each bell is marked with a date range, representing a bicentennial period: ”1773 ... 1973,” ”1774 ... 1974,” ”1775 ... 1975,” and ”1776 ... 1976.” Corresponding exterior text includes phrases such as ”BOSTON TEA PARTY,” ”THE SOUND OF LIBERTY,” and ”THE YEAR OF DESTINY.” The interiors of the bells are inscribed with detailed English text describing the historical context of the exterior imagery, for example, ”The Old North Bridge, Concord.
