Significant Dave Drake Edgefield SC 4 Gallon End of Day Tally Jar
Significant Dave Drake, Slave Made Edgefield SC Four Gallon Crescent Moon mark at base with the end of day Tally (addition) Jar. Circa 1830's, slave made example. This is one of the most rare pieces of Edgefield stoneware, especially in an early period jar, where you have the end of day totals, of either jars, jugs, pitchers, canning jar etc. in the breakdown of gallon capacity. This example has all one could want with the jar having the 4 scratched in the top middle shoulder and ten punctates in the number 4. Also more scratches in the jar that look to be writing on this example. This is a stellar example with a outstanding eye appeal and just the history is of this jar is remarkable, let alone it surviving from the early 1800's. If you collect Edgefield stoneware well this one is sure to make a statement and worthy of any museum display. Condition, has an old lug handle glaze repair that was done in the early 1980's and two small rim chips that are repaired, two small under lug handle has two small flakes see pictures. The jar has a firing line that runs on the back side of the jar, see pictures. For a old repair from the 1980s it's a great job and once upon a shelf the repairs are hard to find. Overall the jar gets a very good grade on the condition and displays outstanding. Fresh example from a North Carolina collection. Standing 15" Tall
