Significant Edgefield South Carolina Dave Drake 3 Gallon Churn
Significant Edgefield SC Dave Drake 3 Gallon Churn. Slave made churn. What an example of Dave's hands in this 3 gallon 2 piece churn. Highly significant example from Stoney Bluff South Carolina site. One of a few true known churn examples. This churn consist of two pieces. The two pieces are the bottom and midsection, where it was fused/pulled up together. Classic tooled shoulder application with two "/" and three punctuates. This example bears an outstanding basically polka dotted alkaline glaze which we do know of a signed and dated example that in fact more than likely came from the same kiln firing and probably was turned just before or after this example where the date on the jar with the same glaze is signed "LM Aug 1, 1855". In my opinion, this churn that Cagle is offering here is of the same clay, thrown the same day, glazed the same day, and fired in the same kiln as the jar that is signed "LM Aug 1 - 1855". Both pots have the identical glaze characteristics which is almost impossible to find in any region of southern stoneware let alone Dave Drake's works. One of the other interesting characteristics of this piece are that Dave's fingerprints are at base. Condition as follows - professional chip restoration in rim - see pictures. Has normal glaze chips due to age and wear that does not distract from the piece. Lug handle has glaze flake professional restoration. Note that the handle is 100% original and intact but does have professional restoration. Oher than that, no major chips, no hairlines, or other repairs. Standing - 14 1/8" Tall
