Bidspirit auction | 1862 British Enfield Pattern 1861

1862 British Enfield Pattern 1861 Artillery Carbine .577 Caliber Percussion Rifle - An original British military Pattern 1861 Enfield Artillery Carbine manufactured at the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield, and dated 1862. This is the short two-band artillery version of the Enfield percussion rifle family, designed with a nominal 24-inch barrel and chambered in .577 caliber. The lock is marked “1862 ENFIELD” beneath the British Crown/V.R. royal cypher, indicating government manufacture and service during the reign of Queen Victoria. The Pattern 1861 artillery carbine was the improved fast-twist version of the earlier Enfield artillery carbine and was intended as a compact arm for artillery troops. This example has a measured 23.25-inch barrel, two barrel bands, full-length walnut stock, brass trigger guard and buttplate, steel ramrod, sling swivels, and a brass inventory/rack tag marked “67.” The stock and metal show substantial period handling, scratches, dings, patina, and scattered oxidation consistent with military use and age. Action functions properly and the bore is good. Manufactured in 1862. This item is a pre-1899 antique firearm (manufactured in or before 1898) or a qualifying black-powder firearm, and does not require an FFL or background check under federal law.
