American Federal Style Carved Wood Fireplace Mantel Surround - An early 19th-century American Federal-style architectural fireplace mantel surround constructed from wood. The surround features a triple-paneled frieze centered by a carved elliptical sunburst patera. The end blocks above the vertical pilasters are decorated with smaller circular paterae. The pilasters are detailed with vertical reeding, and the projecting mantel shelf rests upon a complex molded cornice that includes a band of textured reeded ornamentation. The piece is finished in multiple layers of heavily distressed paint, primarily a faded green over a cream or white base, which has weathered to a pronounced patina. The top mantel shelf shows a natural wood surface and appears to be a later addition or has been previously stripped. No maker marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the piece. 68 inches Wide by 63 inches Tall.
