Republic Period Chinese Laque Burgaute Mother of Pearl Inlaid Lacquer Box - A cylindrical lidded lacquer box produced in China during the early 20th century Republic Period. The wooden body is finished in a dark black lacquer and decorated using the laque burgaute technique with intricate mother of pearl shell inlays. The lid depicts a central human figure standing under the branches of a pine tree, surrounded by a repeating triangular border. The sides of the box and lid are further ornamented with stylized floral, avian, and geometric motifs. Several inlay pieces feature fine incised linear detailing. The underside of the base bears the painted mark CHINA in white block lettering. The item includes a retail tag from the Heart of Ohio Antique Center dating the piece to the 1910s to 1920s.
