Bidspirit auction | Japanese Mikawachi Porcelain Cup and
Japanese Mikawachi Porcelain Cup and Shaped Saucer Tray - This Japanese porcelain set consists of a hand-painted cup and an elongated, lobed saucer tray. The set is decorated in the Aka-e style, utilizing a palette of iron red and black overglaze enamels against a white porcelain ground. The central motif depicts traditional Japanese figures, or bijin, situated within a landscape of stylized pine trees and vegetation. The saucer tray features a distinctive asymmetrical, scalloped form with a recessed circular well to hold the cup and a small molded projection on the underside for stability. Both pieces are marked on the base with hand-painted red characters reading Mikawachi (三川内), indicating production at the Mikawachi kilns, which are historically associated with Hirado ware. The cup features similar markings on the base with an additional small character below the primary kiln mark. Saucer length: 8.5 inches.
