US 1898 U.M.W. of A. Ribbon and a Collection of Trade Tokens - A collection comprising a late 19th-century labor union memorial ribbon and an assortment of numismatic trade and amusement tokens. The ribbon features a metal top clasp depicting a handshake with the inscriptions a group of HOURS and APRIL 1st 1898. The black fabric body is printed in silver with In Memoriam, a central emblem, and the text LOCAL UNION NO. 48 U.M.W. OF A. DALETON, OHIO, identifying it with the United Mine Workers of America. The accompanying collection of metal tokens includes various denominations and categories struck in brass, copper, and silver-toned alloys. Visible inscriptions on the tokens include GOOD FOR 5c IN TRADE, EDDIE'S PLACE, SMITH'S PLACE, 325, and G.L. Several specimens are identified as amusement or vending tokens, such as CAILLE QUALITY MINTS, ADVERTISING KEENEY'S REFRESH-MINTS, BASEBALL TOKEN LOANED TO PLAY, and W.E. & CO. GOOD FOR a FREE GAME. Many tokens feature central circular or hexagonal cutouts. Box length: 12.5 inches. Burns in-house shipping is available.
