A Collection of Type I Original Midget Auto Racing Photographs by Smiths Racing Photos 1948 - This collection consists of Type I original black and white silver gelatin prints documenting the 1948 midget auto racing season. The photographs were produced by Smiths Racing Photos, operated by W. H. Smith in Columbus, Ohio. The studio served as the official photographers for the Central States Racing Association (CSRA), as evidenced by the triangular Official CSRA Photos by Smiths stamps on the front of prints. The subject matter primarily focuses on events at Heidelberg Raceway in Pennsylvania, as well as tracks in Chillicothe and Powell, Ohio, during July and August 1948. Featured drivers include Jackie Seither (Car 5), Al Shaffer (Sheller Spl. D-1), Al Keller (Car 7), Howdy Grant (Car 99), Swede Carpenter (Car 2), Chuck Greenlee (Car 4), Al Duras (Car 48), Bill Spear (Car 2+), Andy Workman (Car 8), and Don McLain (Car 38). The collection includes driver portraits with in-plate signatures, race action sequences on dirt tracks, a winner's circle photograph of Al Keller receiving a trophy, and a portrait of race official Harry Gilchrist. Accompanying the prints are 8 original brown paper negative envelopes. These original sleeves contain extensive notes about the contained photo and/or negative. Any newer manila envelopes present are empty and were utilized for organization, often bearing handwritten location and date information. Most prints feature the Smiths Racing Photos backstamp with the Columbus, Ohio address and phone number. Approximate dimensions: 8 x 10 inches.
