A Collection of Midget Auto Racing Type I Original Photographs and Negatives by Smiths Racing Photos - This archive consists of Type I original black and white silver gelatin photographs and original negatives documenting the 1948 midget car racing season. The collection was produced by Smiths Racing Photos of Columbus, Ohio, and serves as an official record for the Central States Racing Association (CSRA). Featured locations include the Heidelberg Raceway in Heidelberg, Pennsylvania; Powell Motor Speedway in Powell, Ohio; and Marysville, Ohio. The subject matter encompasses high-action track photography, winner's circle trophy presentations, group driver portraits, and candid shots of track officials. Identified drivers include Al Davis (Car 48), Bill Spear, Kilroy Hoover (Car 5), Wally Stokes (documented during his 13th consecutive win), Al Duncan, and Frank Lipton. Track officials identified in the archive include Hank Miller, Frank Miller, Raymond Sherwood, Sherwood Miller, and McWright. Most prints bear a black ink reverse stamp reading Smiths Racing Photos, W. H. Smith, 1414 1/2 N. 5th St., Columbus, Ohio, WA 4775. prints feature a triangular front logo for the CSRA designated as Official Photos by Smiths. The original sleeves contain extensive notes about the contained photo and/or negative, including names, dates, and specific track locations. of the prints are accompanied by their original brown paper negative envelopes, which contain the original film negatives and additional handwritten cataloging information such as numbers A 380, A 381, A 385, A 406, A 407, and A 408. Any newer manila envelopes present in the lot are empty and were used to contain and organize the contents, often featuring location and date information. x 10 inches per print.
