Bidspirit auction | A Group of Four Mid-20th
A Group of Four Mid-20th Century Black Americana Themed Kitchen Towels - This collection consists of four kitchen towels featuring screen-printed and appliqué designs in the Black Americana style, dating from approximately the 1940s to 1950s. The towels are constructed from off-white cotton or linen textiles. One towel features a green wavy border with a screen-printed scene of a woman in a checkered blouse and yellow apron carrying a produce basket, accompanied by a boy in green overalls eating a slice of watermelon. A second towel displays a blue polka-dot border with floral corner accents, depicting a woman in a red floral blouse carrying a steaming pie with a child at her side. The third towel includes a red wave-patterned border and depicts a man washing dishes in a tub, surrounded by musical notes and the lyrics ILL-NEV-ER S-SMI-LE — A-GAIN — in reference to the 1940 popular song. This towel has a faint, illegible red circular stamp in the lower-left corner. The fourth towel features a central fabric appliqué depicting a figure in a red and white polka-dot garment emerging from a large watermelon slice, finished with a solid red border at the bottom.
