Antique B. Leidersdorf Co. N***** Hair Smoking Tobacco Lithographed Tin Lunch Pail - A cylindrical lithographed tin tobacco container produced by the B. Leidersdorf Co. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and later distributed by The American Tobacco Co. as successor. This item was designed as a dual-purpose container, intended for reuse as a lunch pail after the contents were consumed. The tin features a vibrant orange-yellow background with black decorative scrollwork borders. The primary graphic on two sides depicts a profile portrait of a Black individual with textured hair and large hoop earrings. Textual elements include the brand name N***** Hair in large stylized vertical lettering, along with the phrases Smoke or Chew and Smoking Tobacco. Small print indicates the brand was registered in the Patent Office on April 8, 1878. One side of the body includes the manufacturer information for B. Leidersdorf Co., Milwaukee, Wis. and The American Tobacco Co., Successor. Regulatory text identifies the production site as Factory No. 27, District of Ky. and includes a legal notice regarding the reuse of the package for tobacco. A partial green paper tax stamp remains adhered to the upper portion of the body. The container is equipped with a wire bail handle attached to the sides via circular metal mounts.
