Civil War 1865 USMA West Point Brady Albumen WIlliam S Starring - Wrote 1st Sioux Indian Dictionary - Civil War Matthew Brady albumen of West Point class of 1865 graduate William Sylvanus Starring. The oval albumen measures 5” x 3.785” and is mounted to an 8.5” x 10.25” cardstock. A gilt border encircles the albumen and includes the photographer imprint ”Brady New York”. 1865 was the only year that Matthew Brady was contracted to take West Point Graduate photographs. Also included is Starring's calling card, ”William S. Starring Captain of Ordnance, U.S. Army”. William Sylvanus Starring (1841-1889) attended West Point from 1860-1865, emerging to join the US Army in operations out west, specifically at Forts Lyon, Laramie, Kearny, and Sanders between 1865 and 1869. Given his time in the Dakota Territory, he was able to interact and study with the Sioux. He is best known for co-authoring with Lieutenant Joseph K. Hyer and ”with the aid of Charles Guerreu, Indian Interpreter” a bi-lingual dictionary of the Sioux language, ”Lacotah, Dictionary of the Sioux Language”.This  became the first book published in the the state of Wyoming in 1866. The dictionary was written at Fort Laramie during the brutal winter of 1865-1866. It was printed on a hand press at the army post. The November/December 2005 issue of ”Military Images” contains other views of William Starring and discusses the creation of the Sioux dictionary.
