Bidspirit auction | U.S M1816 HARPERS FERRY TYPE
U.S M1816 HARPERS FERRY TYPE I FLINTLOCK MUSKET - United States M 1816 Type I Harpers Ferry flintlock musket in its original flintlock configuration. The lock plate is marked in three lines behind the hammer HARPERS / FERRY/ 1818. The eagle above the U.S. appears to have been intentionally ground off. The left side of the barrel near the breech is stamped US in an oval. An inspector's stamp ”LV” is found on the edge of the stock flat opposite the lock. The stock is in overall very good condition with a thin 4.5” crack on the underside of the forestock. The lock action is tight and works perfectly in both positions. All of the metal parts of this gun have a matching mellow untouched patina. There are some small indentations in the metal on the right side of the barrel between the muzzle and the top band. The ramrod is only 40” long and there is an old piece of yellowed white material that was wrapped around a 1” section of the ramrod to keep it from slipping down. Overall, a very good honest example of a musket that saw service during the Mexican War and the very earliest days of the Civil War. In-house shipping is available.
