CIVIL WAR IDED POCKET BIBLE & HYMNAL 1ST OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY
Civil War prayer hymnal and pocket bible identified to Private Thomas H. Hiest, Co. A, 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The pocket bible is inscribed, "September 28, 1861 Presented by the Ladies of Dayton, Ohio to Thomas H. Hiest Co A First Ohio Regiment". The bible is titled on the cover "Cromwell's Soldier's Bible", and was published by the American Tract Society at the beginning of the Civil War. It consisted of 32 pages of short bible passages and was a reprint of the 17th century bible given by British military leader and politician Oliver Cromwell to his soldiers. There is independent verification that the Cromwell Bible was the specific bible that was issued to each member of the 1st Ohio Volunteer infantry (OVI) by the "Ladies of Dayton". The Western Reserve Historical Society of Cleveland, Ohio has in its holdings a letter written October 1, 1861 by Alexander Varian, a member of Company D, 1st OVI, in which he states that each member was presented a "Cromwell's Soldier's Bible, a donation from the Ladies of Dayton". The pocket bible is accompanied by "The Soldier's Hymn Book" which was published by the New York Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in 1861. Both books are in very good condition.Thomas H. Hiest was a 27 year old blacksmith from Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio who enlisted in Co. A (Lancaster Guards) of the 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. According to his service records he was present at the Battle of Shiloh but then on April 27, 1862 was sent to Hamburgh Landing Hospital 4 miles south of the Shiloh Battlefield and later to Benton Barracks Hospital and finally Camp Chase Hospital. He was diagnosed with gonorrhea, syphilis, chronic diarrhea, bronchitis and general debility. He died at home in Lancaster, Ohio March 7, 1864. A copy of his service records and carded medical file from the US National Archives is included in this group. In-house shipping is available.
