CIVIL WAR CDV IDED 1ST OHIO VOL INFANTRY - KIA - CDV of Lieutenant George J. Grove signed in ink below image as Lieut. Geo J. Grove. Full standing view of the officer wearing sash, officer’s frock and shoulder straps and sword, and holding cap with infantry bugle insignia. No backmark but reverse contains modern very light pencil information on Grove. Corners of cdv are slightly trimmed. A search of the American Civil War research database reveals only one G. Grove who served as an officer during the Civil War, namely George J. Grove of the 1 st OVI. He enlisted in early October 1861 as Sergeant in Co. E, 1 st OVI. He was promoted 2nd Lieut. November 2, 1862 and was transferred to Co. F July 27, 1863 at which time he was promoted 1 st Lieutenant. Grove was killed in action May 27, 1864 at Dallas, Georgia in the assault at Pickett’s Mill. He is buried at Marietta National Cemetery. The 1 st OVI (three years) fought at Shiloh, Corinth, Stones River, Chickamauga, Battles for Atlanta, including Kennesaw Mountain and Peach Tree Creek.
