CIVIL WAR CDV -11TH ILLINOIS INFANTRY KIA SHILOH - Photograph of Franklin D. Hartman, a Private in Co. A of the Eleventh Illinois Volunteer Infantry, who was killed in action while fighting on the first day of the battle at Shiloh, April 6, 1862. This image identifies young Hartman on the reverse by a period pencil inscription: “Frank D. Hartman died in Civil War Shiloh 1862 11 Inf. Co. A Enlisted July 30 1861.” This CDV is a war time copy shot of a tintype owned by Hartman's family who undoubtedly had CDV copies made of the tintype to share with family and friends. The two cent revenue tax stamp on the reverse indicates that this photograph was made between 1864 and August 1,1866 when the photography stamp tax was repealed. The regiment had been under the command of W.H. L. Wallace, and at Shiloh it fought under Lt. Col. Thomas E.G. Ransom. Just prior to this in February it was heavily engaged at Fort Donelson. Frank Hartman was born ca. 1838-1839 in Union County, Pennsylvania. By 1860 he and his family had moved to Illinois and were living in Stephenson County near the small town of Buckeye, just north of Freeport, Illinois where he enlisted. Most of company A was raised from Stephenson County. He is buried in an apparently unknown grave at the Shiloh National Cemetery. In-house shipping is available.
