M1840 D. Nippes Musket w/Maynard Patent Primer US Marked NOFFL - MFG/IMPORTER: D. Nippes MODEL: 1840 SERIAL: nsn CALIBER/GAUGE: 69 cal smooth bore CONDITION: Bright and good overall. Action has safety and full cock and fires. The trigger does not reset on its own, but instead must be pulled forward manually. SIZE: 42” bbl. NOTES: Scarce Maynard Alteration of the Nippes made M1840 musket. As flintlocks became obsolete and the US Ordnance Board began to move to percussion rifles, they also experimented with the priming system of the percussion mechanism. This came in the form of a contract with Dr. Edward Maynard, who devised this novel tape priming system to take the place of priming caps. Only about 2,000 of these Maynard altered muskets were produced, and they are scarce today. Aside from the markings stamped at the rear of the lock plate and on the Maynard mechanism, we found a US stamp at the top of the butt plate. We did not observe other markins nor did we see cartouche stamps on the stock opposite the lock plate. In house shipping available. This item was manufactured before 1898.
