WWII Nazi German Admiral Karl Donitz Autograph Lot including ALS & TLS - Karl Doenitz autograph lot that includes a typed letter signed (TLS) and a handwritten, autographed letter signed (ALS) The typed letter signed wishing Professor Dr. Charles Burdick of San Jose State College a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and asking him to provide information and recommendations regarding the best American Universities for a German student who wanted to study in the United States. Bold 2.875” blue ink signature on this 8.25” x 11” stationery. The ALS is written and signed by Doenitz on an 8.25” x 5.875” on his personal stationery. In this letter, he thanks Dr. Burdick for all of the help rendered to this student. During WWI, Doenitz was commanding U-boat U-68 when, after sinking a British ship, his boat was outrun and he was captured by the British and made a prisoner of war. As a result of this experience, Doenitz began to formulate the concept of submarines traveling in attack groups ”wolfpacks”. By the time World War Two started, he commanded the entire U-Boat fleet in the German Navy. By 1943, he was Grand Admiral of the Kriegsmarine. After Hitler's suicide, April 30, 1945, Doenitz was appointed, according to Hitler's will, as his successor. Donitz remained as head of state with the titles of President of Germany and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces until his cabinet was dissolved by the Allied powers. At the Nuremberg trials, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He died in Aumuhle, Germany in 1980. In-house shipping is available.
