WWII Nazi German D-Day June 6, 1944 Broadside Proclamation to the Population of the Isle of Jersey - Rare World War Two D-Day 12.08” x 8” German Broadside - proclamation issued June 6, 1944 by Oberstleutnant Heine to the population of the Isle ( island) of Jersey. Overall excellent conditions with a small hole in each corner made when this document was actually posted. The four corner tips have been affixed to a brown cardstock. We have not attempted to remove this broadside from the cardstock but it appears very possible to do so. The broadside is printed in both German and English and reads, ”PROCLAMATION TO THE POPULATION OF THE ISLE OF JERSEY Germany's enemy is on the point of attacking French soil. I expect the population of Jersey to keep its head, to remain calm, and to refrain from any acts of sabotage and from hostile acts against the German Forces even should the fighting spread to Jersey. At the first signs of unrest or trouble I will close the streets to every traffic and will secure hostages. Attacks against the German Forces will be Punished by death. Der Kommandant der Festung Jersey (Signed) Heine, Oberst. Jersey 6th June, 1944”. These broadsides were undoubtedly greeted with great joy and celebration by the Jersey citizens who had lived under German rule since the Channel Islands were occupied July 1940. The Channel Islands were the only de jure part of the British Empire in Europe to be occupied by Nazi Germany during the war. The citizens would suffer great hardships during the winter of 1944/1945 as both they and their German occupiers approached starvation. The island was not liberated until May 9, 1945.
