WWII Nazi German Jewish Litzmannstadt Ghetto - ?odz Ghetto Resident Postal Money Receipt - Rare World War Two pre - printed Nazi Litzmannstadt Ghetto postal money receipt. Marked for “Juden in Litzmannstadt – Ghetto”. This receipt is partially filled in and measures approximately 4” x 1.5”. Also known as the ?odz Ghetto as it was located in ?odz, Poland - Litzmannstadt being the Nazi German name for ?odz. In all of occupied Europe, ?odz was second in size only to the Warsaw Ghetto. Over 163,000 Polish Jews were living in the ghetto when the gates were closed on April 30, 1940. Due to its remarkable productivity as a manufacturing center for the Wehrmacht, the Ghetto managed to stay open until August 1944. In 1942 the Nazis began to deport Jews from the Ghetto to the Chelmno and Auschwitz extermination camps. By the time the Soviets arrived in 1945 only 877 Jewish people were still alive.
