It is a first generation wartime photographs, not a post war reprint. Photo measures 8.5” x 6.5”. When the first beetles were introduced, Adolf Hitler announced that they would be named the Kraft durch Freude (KdF-Wagen, literally ”strength through joy car”. This factory eventually became a massive complex known as the “City of the Kdf-Car”.The plant had only just started small-scale production of what would become the Volkswagen Beetle when the company halted civilian production with the onset of World War Two and transitioned to production of military material. The factory employed a variety of categories of workers, including German employees and migrant workers, but also prisoners of war, concentration camp inmates including 350 skilled Jewish metal workers relocated from Auschwitz, and Soviet and Polish civilian foreign forced laborers. A first concentration camp on the site, Arbeitsdorf, was established on factory property in April 1942. The Fallersleben facility eventually became a subcamp of the Neuengamme concentration camp. Overall, the Volkswagen plant contained four concentration camps and eight forced-labor camps. In-house shipping is available.
