A Pair of Hand Painted Conical Earthenware Vases - This pair of hand painted earthenware vases is constructed from a buff-colored clay with a matte, unglazed finish. Each vase features a distinct tapering conical form that rises to a narrow stem, accented by a raised, decorated band approximately two-thirds of the way up, and finishing in a flared, flat rim. The decorative program is executed in traditional earth-tone slips of iron red and dark brown, organized into horizontal registers. The lower body of each vessel is decorated with stylized botanical motifs, including fronds and broad serrated leaves, set against a background of curved lines. The upper portions and necks include various geometric patterns such as cross-hatching, vertical dashes on the raised band, and simple horizontal banding. The bases are flat and wide, providing stability to the tapering form. The underside of the base (photo 6) is unglazed and shows surface texture and faint indentations from the potting process; no legible maker name, signature, or country-of-origin mark is present.
