J. D. Johnson Studio Pottery Stoneware Vase, 1998 - This hand-thrown stoneware vase features a tapered cylindrical form with a flared, rounded rim and pronounced horizontal throwing rings around the lower half of the body. The exterior is finished with a variegated multi-layered drip glaze. A top layer of yellowish-green and ochre glaze flows downward over a base layer of mottled sage-green and brown. The interior is coated with a yellowish-brown glaze. The unglazed stoneware base is incised with a hand-written signature and date. The mark consists of a large, stylized script character J on the left and a stylized D to its right, with the numerals 98 incised further to the right. Below the initials, the surname Johnson is written in smaller script. Based on this legible signature, the piece is attributed to maker J. D. Johnson and dated 1998. A small piece of white adhesive tape is attached to the interior rim.
