A Collection of United States Buffalo Nickel Five Cent Coins Including a Feather Dangle Earring - This collection consists of multiple United States five cent coins, commonly referred to as Buffalo or Indian Head nickels, including one that has been modified into a piece of jewelry. Each coin features the obverse design by James Earle Fraser depicting a profile of a Native American with the word LIBERTY visible along the right edge. The reverse of the unmodified coins depicts an American bison with the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS. Two of the loose coins bear the date 1936 at the lower left of the obverse (photo 2, photo 4), while the date on the third loose coin is worn and illegible (photo 6). The fourth coin has been converted into a single drop earring. Four small holes have been drilled into the coin's perimeter. A ball-stud post finding is attached to the top hole, and three cast metal feather charms are suspended by jump rings from the three holes at the bottom (photo 8, photo 9). The reverse of the earring coin has been modified with a hammered, dimpled texture that completely obscures the original design (photo 10, photo 11). The coins are composed of a cupro-nickel alloy. The earring findings and charms are fashioned from a base metal, and no hallmarks are present on any of the jewelry components.
