Erté (1892–1990) was a renowned Russian-born French artist and designer, widely celebrated as a central figure and ”Father of Art Deco”. Born Romain de Tirtoff in Saint Petersburg, he adopted the pseudonym ”Erté” (the French pronunciation of his initials ”R.T.”) to avoid embarrassing his aristocratic family, who had wanted him to pursue a naval career.
