WW2: German 1930s Writing Desk - Important: See lot #100. This is a nicely made, custom desk with burl veneers and inlay. Cross stretcher has 4-1/4” diameter round brass plate with engraved swastika. The piece's provenance offers some clue -- if not direct evidence -- of its maker, as well as the approximate time it was made. It was consigned along with the Luftwaffe cabinet, which sat atop this desk since it was obtained by the collector in the 1960s, purchased along with the cabinet. It was always presumed by the consignor and his surviving family to have been made as the base for the cabinet, as the veneers and inlay are very similar (the woods are practically identical, though design elements differ slightly). Blackwell believes it likely that it was made by thesame cabinetmaker, but not at the same time as the cabinet, as the desk top design doesn't line up with the footprint of the cabinet. It seems reasonable that it was commissioned as a base for the cabinet by the same Luftwaffe officer who commissioned the cabinet. The letter accompanying the cabinet doesn't mention this desk. There is a pull-out, black leather covered writing surface. Desk measures 43-1/4” wide, 32” high and 21-1/4” deep. Bumps and scratches.
